Scuba Diving in Mexico with www.godiving.org
Diving in Mexico can tidily be split into East (Caribbean) coast and West (Pacific) coast.
Mexico East Coast - three main areas, Cozumel, Yucatan Peninsula and Chinchorro Bank.
Cozumel - Drift diving from dive boats means that although a lot of divers are in the water, they are all following the same drifts so keep away from each others. The diving in this part of Mexico is easy, the water clear and there is plenty of marine life, which is kept healthy by the currents.
Difficulty of diving varies from beginner to the more advanced, with the divemasters being able to tell you what there is on offer at each location.
For the more advanced divers, diving sites such as the Columbia Pinnacles offer 28m high pinnacles of coral with tunnels and overhangs! Sharks aren't common in this part of Mexico, but other marine life including barracuda, give plenty to see.
Yucatan - Easy Mexican diving with big shoals and reefs for night diving. Popular cave diving sites attract plenty of visitors with diving centres offering cave diving courses on private land.
Chinchorro Bank - Diving on pristine corals inside and outside of a shallow lagoon with abundant fish. There are also many shipwrecks with plenty being over 200 years old and some less than 50 years old. Some wrecks are little more than scattered remains, so speak to the dive leader before deciding which to dive.
Mexico Pacific Coast - opportunities to see whales, whale sharks, mantas, hammerheads and other sharks, dolphins, sea lions and rocky reefs with plenty of fish. The sites offer reefs, channels and wrecks. Want something else for diving? Then this part of Mexico offers divers seastars, featherstars, anemones, custaceans and Pacific fish.
This area offers divers plenty of spectacular drop off dives, including Punta Coyote. Diving here is supplemented by local residents - the sea lions. There is also a landing craft converted into a car ferry, that sank with it's load of lorries.
the more serious diver will relish the opportunity to take a liveaboard to the Socorro Islands. A fair journey but once there treats are in store for the diver, including a Manta cleaning station. Humpbacks pass through the area and hammerheads and other sharks, plus eels, rays and dolphins also abound.
